Improving social work education: Taking responsibility at the door

Abstract

In this article, the authors discuss the importance of maintaining admissions standards in schools of social work despite a decline in enrollment during the past decade. The implementation of new, more stringent admissions criteria in one school of social work is examined. The results of the new requirements showed that students with bachelor of social work degrees had significantly higher undergraduate grade point averages and significantly lower Graduate Record Examinations scores than did applicants without bachelor of social work degrees. Implications for the advanced-standing program are discussed. The reactions of faculty, students, and professionals in the community to the more stringent admissions policy are described, as well as the impact of these requirements on minority enrollment and recruitment.
