THE CONCEPT OF EDUCATIONAL RENEWAL IN THE THOUGHT OF MUHAMMAD ABDUH
This scientific articles of the research results shows: First, the concept of renewing the thought of Muhammad Abduh relies on three things: (1) the liberation of Muslim thought from the shackles of taqlid or following a view without explanation, rationale, and proposition used; (2) purification or purification movement of Islamic teachings from various superstitious and superstition beliefs; And (3) manifests science as a tool for the progress of Muslims and that Islam has alignment with science and technology. Secondly, the educational reform according to Muhammad Abduh is summarized as follows: (1) Science and technology do not contradict with the teachings of Islam. (2) Public schools (secular) should be coloured with a strong religious education. (3) Education in the Islamic world should not imitate the Western model of education. Abduhfought for a non-import functional education system, which included universal education for all children, men and women. Everyone should have the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. All should receive religious education that ignores the sectarian differences; (4) the educational curriculum should include: (a) the development of modern science and technology; (B) the doctrine of Islamic teachings; (C) morals; (D) the life history of Prophet Muhammad, friends and family, and the causes of the glory of Islam. Third, the relevance of Muhammad Abduh’s educational renewal concept to contemporary Islamic educational practice includes the followings: (1) contemporary Islamic education should not use a separate dichotomy system of general sciences with the science of religion. (2) The educational curriculum should be designed to be relevant and consistent with the dynamics of science and society. (3) Religious education should be given from the early age.
